The prevalence of celiac disease in the general population was believed to be 1 in 300, but recent evidence suggests that there are more undiagnosed than diagnosed cases. A revised estimate of the prevalence of celiac disease in the general population is about 1%. We believe that the prevalence of gluten allergy may be closer to 20% of any symptomatic population.
