The Power of Love
The word Love is one the most popular words used to describe human bonding.
The power of falling in love is unmistakable. Stories, songs and popular
conversation use romantic love, the bonding energy that supports reproduction as
the true meaning of love.
Some popular songs resonate with a wide audience and are often copied over
decades. I have arranged and recorded one of these songs the Power of Love which
I made it my list of special songs. There are a small number of songs which
appeal to me as hymns, anthems, big songs, the equivalent to Beethoven’s heroic
rendition of Schiller’s poem, The Ode to Joy in the ninth symphony. These big
songs are often about love of the highest calling.
Jennifer Rush
recorded the Power of Love in 1985 and it became popular worldwide, making the
Guinness Book of Records as the best selling single by a female solo artist in
the history of the British music industry. That record was broken by Whitney
Houston's "I Will Always Love You" in 1992. Laura Branigan’s cover made it to
the U.S. Top 40 in 1987. Celine Dion made another hit version in 1994. The
lyrics express the euphoria of falling in love, the reprieve “when the world
outside's too much to take, that all ends when I'm with you.”
The chorus is a promise that every normal man wants to hear from the woman he
loves:” 'Cause I am your lady…” The promise of complete devotion seems realistic
when you are falling in love, but fades or disappears over time. The promise
suggests the biblical Ruth’s promise: “Do not urge me to leave you or turn back
from following you; for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will
lodge. Your people shall be my people.“ This promise has been made in a thousand ways, probably for thousands of
years. Of course, every woman wants a man who makes a similar commitment, but
men are notoriously fickle. Nietzsche stated that only superior men and women
have the right to promise. Most promises are made to be broken, so that superior
knowledge, understanding and discipline are required to maintain commitments
over time.
Here is a sample the Jenifer Rush Lyrics
The whispers in the morning
Of lovers sleeping tight
Are rolling by like thunder now
As I look in your eyes
I hold on to your body
And feel each move you make
Your voice is warm and tender
A love that I could not forsake
Cause I am your lady
And you are my man
Whenever you reach for me
I'll do all that I can
Lost is how I'm feeling lying in your arms
When the world outside's too much to take
That all ends when I'm with you
Even though there may be times
It seems I'm far away
But never wonder where I am
Cause I am always by your side
Cause I am your lady
And you are my man
Whenever you reach for me
I'll do all that I can
- The book, I and Thou, focuses on intimate relationships. Innate tendencies are hard at
work when people meet, become lovers and end with arguments and fighting. The
same tendencies determine how family members interact and explain why so many
families are “dysfunctional.” When lovers form an enduring pair bond, they often
become parents and everything changes. Humans seek bonding with others and are
distressed when they become isolated. Humans bond to each other in several ways.
The most enduring bonds are kin-related, based on closely shared genes. The
deepest bonding occurs when mother and infant are together continuously from
birth and mother breast-feeds the infant. Bonds among family members are the
most enduring. Bonds to friends, lovers and spouses are the next most
significant. Bonds to colleagues, neighbors and even strangers that are admired
from a distance are next. Friendships are often temporary bonds, based on the
need to affiliate with others for protection, social status, feeding, sex and
fun.
