Food contains problems for many people. There are many ways that food
interacts incorrectly with the human body causing harm. Highly esteemed whole
grains, for example, may be the cause of serious digestive diseases, skin
disease, chronic lung disease, arthritis, and brain disorders. Many people have
been conscientious in following "good dietary advice, eating
whole grains, dairy products, supplementing bran and fiber, taking supplements,
and reducing intake of negative influences such as alcohol, animal fat, salt,
and sugar. When this strategy fails and they grow sicker, they are confused.
They feel cheated when they discover the cause of their suffering is their
compliance with "good dietary advice".
The Alpha Nutrition Program is a relatively simple but powerful technology.
The project began in 1982 when I became ill and discovered that fasting resolved
my illness. At that time I found medical journal articles and popular books
which described my predicament and recommended different diet revision
approaches. Many explanations were offered and many food ideas converged
on one theme: changing your diet could alleviate disease. Most of the
explanations I encountered in these early books turned out to be wrong, but the
basic observations were correct-- good observations but wrong explanations. I
eventually discovered a minimalist diet which left me fully functional with
symptoms only when I deviated from the basic foods. My medical practice changed
direction as I began to learn more about this disease process and tried to help
patients who were having experiences similar to mine.
I offer the latest
version of the Alpha Nutrition Program with the hope that others will benefit.
This is a textbook that describes a self-directed approach to health recovery
and problem solving. The instructions are intended for an intelligent reader who
can heal himself or herself. I have kept the polemics to a minimum. There is
little benefit in discussing wrong ideas since they are so numerous. There
is little benefit in hesitation, uncertainty or doubt.
The program is based
on decisions about food selection, eating behavior and health goals. The
background for these decisions is summarized, but I have avoided distracting the
reader with too much theory and focused on practical matters and technique.
I have accepted that the readers that will follow the instructions in this book
will have above average intelligence, will be educated and will have the ability
to self-regulate. Smarter, well-motivated people can sometimes help others
who are not so well prepared. I have always wished that physicians and
dietitians would take more interest in diet revision, but the Alpha Nutrition
Program is too demanding for most of them. The reader should assume that he or
she is empowered and self-responsible. The idea is to proceed with self-directed
The development of the Alpha Nutrition Program began with
observations that food-selection patterns are associated with dysfunction
and disease. In one person, for example, the daily ingestion of multigrain
bread, milk, cheese, bran muffins, beef, coffee, orange juice, and wine is
associated with chronic fatigue, sleepiness after eating, nose congestion,
flushing, headaches, generalized aching, stiffness, and episodes of unexplained
depression. When the food list is changed to rice, vegetables, chicken, peaches,
and pears, the symptoms disappear and the person reports increased energy and a
renewed sense of well-being. Similar observations are reported in a large sample
of people of all ages. A variety of other dysfunctional patterns are found to
improve with proper diet revision.
The Alpha Nutrition Program is a set of instructions and nutrient tools
designed to resolve disease through diet revision. We reasoned that everyone probably has a small set of best-fit foods that
would allow them to feel and function optimally. The first goal of therapy
should then be to identify the simplest set of best foods for each person. The
core-concept further developed as we kept score of adverse food reactions
reported by patients and found that rice and common, cooked vegetables were
among the best tolerated and most acceptable of all food choices. Everyone who was involved with the development and implementation of the
program was impressed, pleased, and sometimes surprised by the positive impact
of the program in major areas of health concern:

rhinitis, chronic fatigue, migraine and tension headaches, indigestion,
irritable bowel, chronic diarrhea, fibromyalgia, edema, and sleep disorders

A solution for food-related illnesses and malnutrition problems in aging

surprising discovery. Often foggy minds, irritability, anxiety, panic disorder

Timing of the Program
Since there are many reasons for doing diet revision, Alpha Nutrition builds in
flexibility in the sequence and timing of food introduction. The program is a
journey along a path. The duration of the journey is variable, depending on who
is traveling, why the journey was undertaken, and what burdens have to be
carried along. A relatively healthy person who wants to redesign a preventive
and health optimizing Alpha diet can proceed more quickly than someone who is
seriously ill. Both the healthiest and the sickest person need to clear during
the first 10 days on Phase 1 and then proceed with food reintroductions. Since
initial clearing usually takes 10 days, we have tended to use 10 day periods for
planning progress along the path.
For significant health problems, Phase 1
can begin with a food holiday. Food is replaced by Alpha ENF for 10 days or
longer. Alpha ENF continued as foods are reintroduced to supply a portion of the
required daily nutrients as foods are gradually reintroduced. You can compare
the beginning of Alpha Nutrition to infant-feeding practice; you return to the
beginning and start over again. Alpha ENF acts like mother's milk or a safe
formula in infant feeding, supporting nutrition while a new diet is slowly, and
carefully created. The pace of food introduction varies with your illness and
state of tolerance to foods discovered as you proceed along the path.
The exclusion of wheat, rye, barley are the
initial steps when gluten allergy is suspected. Gluten elimination is
part of the comprehensive diet revision plan in the Alpha Nutrition Program. The Program is gluten-free and is recommended as
the best diet revision strategy for anyone with diagnosed celiac disease, or any

Historic Note: Dr. Gislason's first books referred to the “Core
