Alpha Nutrition Program Strategy

The Alpha Nutrition Program is designed to reduce cholesterol, total fat, saturated fats, and food allergy while increasing vegetable fiber intake. The program can be recommended, along with exercise and relaxation, as the most important defense against cardiovascular disease. The program is especially desirable for people who are struggling with chronic symptoms that suggest they have food-related disease and are at risk for arterial disease. Clues to the pervasive effects of the wrong food supply include recurrent symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, digestive symptoms, arthritic symptoms, food cravings and compulsive eating or drinking. The presence of recurrent or persistent symptoms means the complete comprehensive diet revision is required - not just salt and fat reduction. 

 Lower Caloric Intake

Many animal studies have established that calorie restriction slows ageing. Luigi Fontana et al studied 18 individuals, aged 32 to 85 years, who had been on a low calorie diet for 3 to 15 years, and compared them to 18 matched subjects on a normal diet. The calorie restricted group consumed between 10% and 25% fewer calories than the average American by eating small amounts of nutrient-dense foods, maintaining proper nutrition. The diet reduced major atherosclerosis risk factors:  serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides and blood pressure.  The calorie restricted group also had high levels of beneficial HDL. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures in the calorie restriction group the average was 100/60 mmHg compared with 130/80 mmHg in the normal diet group.

Carotid artery thickness was 40% less in the calorie-restricted group than in the comparison group and none of the individuals on calorie restriction had evidence of atherosclerotic plaque. Fasting glucose and insulin were also up to 65% lower in the calorie-restricted group, indicating a lower risk of diabetes.

Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Diet

A diet low in fat and sodium and rich in fruits and vegetables lowers blood pressure and blood levels of homocysteine, according to the DASH study investigators.  The DASH diet allowed 27% of calories from fat and is rich in fruit, vegetables, nuts, fish and low-fat dairy products.  Compared with the control diet with a high sodium level, the DASH diet with a low sodium level led to a mean systolic blood pressure  7.1 mm Hg lower in participants without hypertension, and 11.5 mm Hg lower in participants with hypertension.
