    Some of My Favorites

I listen to a lot of music, hoping to find special singers and performances. I have selected a few of my favorites that span a range of styles, singers and countries. The difficulties and pleasures of relationships inspire more songs than any other topic. The lyrics often display the experiences of the performer. The links are to YouTube performances. • Dido

  • I discovered Dido several years and continue to enjoy her music. An attractive performer with a gentle voice and meaningful lyrics. Life for Rent was her the second studio album released in September 2003. The album was produced by Rollo Armstrong and American songwriter Rick Nowels and sold over 12 million copies worldwide, the best-selling album of 2003 and the best-selling album of the 2000s in the UK.

  • Jess Glynne

Jess Glynne's video Performance of Take Me Home is a rare jewel. Jess is fascinating with her unique voice timbres, and facial beauty. Her grief of love lost is expressed poignantly. The Genius website offers this discussion of the video: ”Due to its story of care and compassion for the vulnerable, “Take Me Home” was chosen as the charity single for BBC Children In Need 2015. It’s also the fifth single from Jess Glynne’s debut album I Cry When I Laugh. Glynne described writing the song with Steve Mac and Wayne Hector as an “amazing moment”: The song’s music video was released on the 30th of October 2015. Described as “powerful” by Entertainment Weekly, it features Glynne nude as she sings to the camera. Glynne told The Independent that the entire album was about a specific heartbreak: The songs on this album are about a girl. I would never lie about a situation I’ve been in, I’m an honest person. I feel like with the album I’m putting my cards out on the table. I wouldn’t want it to be misconstrued and the fact of the matter is those songs are about a girl. I was heartbroken about a girl, it wasn’t a guy."

I understood a listener's comment "I love this song. It's the best song I have ever heard."

  • Darryl Hall

  • I have often listened Darryl Hall's Online performances and wanted to feature two singers that appeared on his online offerings, Nikki Jean and Grace Potter. Daryl Hall, a famous American rock, R&B and soul singer, keyboardist, guitarist, songwriter and producer was a co-founder of Hall & Oates. Hall started Live From Daryl’s House,  free monthly music performances as a web show in 2007 that features visiting singers and musicians. The recording studio looks comfortable and accommodates a large group of musicians and videographers. The arrangements are sophisticated, musicians excellent and the recordings set a high standard.

  • Grace Potter Things I never needed with Daryl Hall

  • Allison Moorer is an American alternative country singer and the younger sister of Shelby Lynne. She signed to MCA Nashville in 1998 and made her debut on the U.S. Billboard country charts with the release of her debut single "A Soft Place to Fall". Of all the Nashville singers, I pick Allison as my favorite. She is attractive with a calm dignified demeanor and a gentle voice. She sings well.
  • Allison Moorer Soft Place to fall

  • Shawn Colvin sings the beautiful song Never Saw Blue Like That
(Song and lyrics by Tom Kimmel, Jeff Franzel & Mark Luna)

  • Chris Botti and Lucia Micarelli
  • Acclaimed trumpeter Chris Botti and "rock star" violinist Lucia Micarelli performed the moving "Emmanuel" in Botti's PBS special CHRIS BOTTI IN BOSTON on PBS (2009). Emmanual was written in 1970 by Michel Colombier, a French composer, songwriter, arranger, and conductor who had a remarkably prolific musical career. The piece was dedicated to his son "Emmanuel" who died of disease at age 5 in 1968.
  • This Video displays the best in musical performance - an impeccable duet with two very talented, dignified and attractive performers. Chris is among the best trumpet players. For a successful pop star, Lucia is an exquisite violinist - a very talented musician.

  • Linda Ronstadt  Heartbeats Accelerating
  • Linda has been called the “Queen of Rock. I first heard this song on my car radio while driving home in 2015. I phone the radio station and learned that this was a Linda Ronstadt song and later found the you tube recording. The arrangement was of great interest - liked the "glass harmonica" woven throughout the song. The young Linda was a great singer.

  • Andrea Bocelli with McPhee and Scherzinger

Andrea has sung duets with a remarkable number of exquisite female singers.
  • I choose Andrea and Katharine McPhee singing My Prayer
  • I have also selected Nicole Scherzinger singing with Andrea Don't cry for Me Argentina in Spanish. Two beautiful people expressing Eva Peron's last wish, dying of cancer. "Evita became a world famous musical (1976) by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. It is based on events surrounding the rise to power of Eva Perón, the Spiritual Leader of the Nation, First Lady, and labor chief of Argentina. It documents her husband Juan Perón's rise to the presidency, possible only because of the revolution organized by Eva, and takes the viewer through her political partnership with Juan, their foreign and domestic policies, her feminist and charity work, her role as the national leader of labor, and her nomination for Vice President and ascent to Spiritual Leader. The Eva in the musical was a redeemed version elevated by music and drama to an iconic personality. The song has been covered by many singers. A movie version of the musical featured Madonna as Eva. The history of Argentina is distressing: " Don't Cry for Me, Argentina addresses an Argentina of the mind. The real Argentina is a bit less attractive; Nobelist VS Naipul said: "Argentina's farcical performance since 1900, given its immense natural resources, highly developed economy, powerful middle class, and ties to European civilization, is one of the greatest mysteries of the twentieth century. It didn't help that the Argentine people kept electing thugs like Peron, who served as president not once, not twice, but three times."

  • We Found Love ( In Kenya)- Lindsey Stirling, Alisha Popat, VenTribe

  • The Prayer Alisha Popat and Diego Ghinati

  • The Photograph  Alisha Popat and Matthew Human

  • We found love is a music video filmed in Kenya with Alisha Popat, a Kenyan singer, Lindsey Sterling, an American violinist, and members of a Maasai Tribe - happy children, colorfully dressed women and the famous tall warriors. One Maasai warrior in his tradition red clothing is trying to play Lindsey's violin. Massai Kenya is a special place on the planet - humans originated here: "There are now about 70 tribes in Kenya, the main area of human evolution. Tribal boundaries are mainly based on language. They can be divided into 3 main groups: the Bantus who came from Nigeria and Cameroon after 400 AD, the Cushitic tribes who came from northern Africa around 2000 BC, and the Nilotic tribes who came from Sudan and Egypt around 400 AD. Most Kenyans have adopted a semi-Western life style, although some tribes – especially the Maasai, Turkana and Samburu - have kept their traditional life styles and appearances. The proud Maasai warriors are the most famous among them. They’ve become a symbol of Kenya and indeed tribal Africa as a whole."
  • Alisha Popat is a loyal Kenyan with Indian ancestors. Following Alisha's path, I selected two of her duets with Diego Ghinati and Matthew Human. Alisha wrote: "My cover of Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli's The Prayer was inspired by the beauty and magic of Kenya. The Westgate terrorist attacks here a few months ago shocked the whole country, we mourned for people we had never met and have now started picking up the pieces together. This song is a prayer for our wonderful nation and the world over. It was such a privilege to work with such a great artist Diego from Verona and a wonderful team." Her duet with Mathew Human and his group of talented musicians was appealing. Mathew is another unusual singer who lives in Oregon, USA.

  • Serendipity, Vernon and Birdy

  • I often discover serendipitously a special performance on YouTube and explore the association of singer, songwriter and the responses of audiences. The young English singer and song writer, Birdy, released a cover version of the Skinny Love in 2011 as her debut single (at 15 years old). Birdy is another jewel whose version of the song became popular in the UK and other countries. Skinny Love is a Bon Iver song, an American indie folk band founded in 2007 by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon.  I can identify with Vernon who preferred wilderness seclusion and created music alone. He released Bon Iver's debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago independently in July 2007. The majority of that album was recorded while Vernon spent three months in a cabin in northwestern Wisconsin. Bon Iver won the 2012 Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album. Bon Iver is French for "good winter." A moment of the lyrics: "Come on skinny love just last the year, Pour a little salt we were never here. My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my . Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer"
  • Birdy has natural beauty, musical finesse, innocence and an unusually compelling voice.
